About us

Our ethos

We strongly believe that everyone can become more self sustainable by generating their own electricity. Not only do we save money on our energy bills, we can help save the planet too.

Our journey began in 2008, helping local communities in Monmouthshire to fund, build and own community wind turbine projects. However, we began getting more and more inquiries for community owned solar installation projects. We’ve installed more than 300 hundred solar PV systems for homes and businesses – we’re pretty good at it now!

We love working with people who have unique dreams and big ambitions to change the way their home or community uses energy and this has led to us creating some very innovative designs.

If you have an original and creative project that you would like help with, be sure to get in touch with us.

Meet the team

Phil Powell

Technical Director

The original founder of Gwent Energy CIC, Phil has a job history of working with the oil industry before realising it was unsustainable and he knew we had to change the way we power our homes.

As one of the original founders the Tintern Angiddy Project before funding was sadly cut short, Phil has always been involved with community projects and has an extensive network of friends and colleagues to liaise with.

Jon Townend

Project Manager

Jon has been a passionate advocate for community owned renewable projects for several years now. Having a strong background in renewable energy developments with founding One Wales Energy and being a partner in Oren Associates, we are pleased to have Jonathan on board with us.

Cyrene (Powell) Graham

Web and Design Curator

Phil’s daughter and recently married to one of Gwent Energy’s independent electrical engineers (PG Electrics), Cyrene has nearly 20 years experience designing websites.

She handles Gwent Energy’s printed material, photography and social media. Despite being comfortable with a keyboard and mouse, she does not shy away from work on the roof and can often be seen lifting solar panels.

Cyrene is Chairperson of Bee Friendly Monmouthshire and has her own website with her portfolio and work.

Glyn Thomas

Installation Supervisor

Glyn has been an independent installer for Gwent Energy CIC right from the beginning, ten years ago.

His knowledge and years of experience in a variety of construction methods, has been essential for many of Gwent Energy’s projects. From roof to ground, Glyn has always completed projects diligently.

Josh Thomas

Electricial Technician

Josh started his career working under the guidance of his father, Glyn Thomas, helping Gwent Energy install solar PV and battery storage systems all over South Wales. He has recently undertaken his Level 3 Electrical Course and is now a registered electrician for Gwent Energy CIC.
